Review: Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Seth Prevratil

It’s back.
The Star Wars saga has returned in full force, and JJ Abrams’ Star Wars: The Force Awakens seems to be the topic of conversation all over the word. After watching this film for the first time, I can honestly say that the excitement surrounding this movie comes with good reason.  JJ Abrams and George Lucas have put together a masterpiece.
After mixed reviews following the creation of the prequel trilogy from 1999-2005, Star Wars fans have been waiting for a follow-up to the original trilogy. Now, over thirty years after Return of the Jedi debuted in theaters, fans finally got their wish.
Abrams does a fantastic job establishing a feeling similar to that of the original trilogy, but he also includes a modernized effect that brings new energy into the series.  The famed director turn’s Lucas’ story into something that recreates the original Star Wars emotion while appealing to a wide variety of viewers. People will walk out of the theater feeling satisfied with the presence of original characters, while also being introduced to both a new cast and storyline. Abrams places everything together in w way that connects with the audience and brings them back to the glory days of the series.

The members of the Star Wars franchise base will be happy to know that the original trio of Harrison Ford (Han Solo), Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia), and Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker) all make appearances at some point throughout the film. Even though time has passed and they have all aged, the three actors still provide a meaningful presence that reminds fans of the originality of the films. That being said, Abrams introduces new characters played by actors who people may have never heard of, but they deliver impactful performances that will leave a lasting impression on viewers all over the world. Daisy Ridley (Rey) seems as though she has been in many movies, and her performance will make people wonder why they have never heard of her. John Boyega (Finn) does a great job of providing some comic relief in the movie, while also convincing the audience of the serious behavior behind his character. Adam Driver (Kylo Ren) succeeds in introducing a new style of evil to the franchise, will also capturing the original tone created by the Dark Side.
Like all movies, this film has its faults. However, with the creation of an interesting story, a quality directing job, and stellar acting, this movie has made the most money in the opening weekend of a movie in history for a reason. Even though people will have questions after they see it, they will understand that the film sets up for a new trilogy to add to the legendary Star Wars franchise.
